Esoteric Hollywood Hr 1: Hitchcock’s Psycho Psyche & MK Ultra w/Jamie Hanshaw

Jamie Hanshaw joins me to do an in-depth analysis of some of Hitchcock’s greatest films and their deeper meaning. Jamie and I deconstruct Notorious, Marnie, Rear Window, North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Vertigo, Psycho, The Birds and Frenzy. We touch on everything from mind control to the occult to MI6 and Tavistock connections, as we learn the master of suspense was also a master of another kind… Jamie’s new book Hollywood Mind Control can be purchased below by clicking on the image, as well as my forthcoming book, Esoteric Hollywood.

  1. Alexander Korda brought together Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger to make three films for the Ministry of Propaganda: The Spy In Black, Contraband and The Invaders. Powell and Pressburger made Martin Scorsese’s favourite film The Red Shoes – and yes that is a wizard of oz monarch reference. The Red Shoes is about a ballet dancer with occult crimson ballet slippers who is (spoiler alert) triggered to commit suicide by her handler. It’s worth noting that Emeric Pressburgers grandson is Andrew McDonald who produced Dredd, Ex Machina and Trainspotting

They also made One of Our Aircraft is Missing for the ministry.

In A Matter of Life and Death they depict earth and an earthly life in brilliant Jack Cardiff photographed colour (Jack directed some interesting films himself including Girl on a Motorcycle and spy film The Liquidator), and Heaven and the afterlife in dreary black and white. Heaven makes mistakes, and humans can outwit the heavenly judical system with our superior emotions (love) and logic. That said it’s a briliant piece of film making.

Red runs through their films so much so that Scorsese over used it in his film Mean Streets. Powell became an advisor to Scorses on every film until his death, and married his editor Thelma Schoonmaker. As mch as I admire him as a brilliant film maker, he was also a creepy arsed old geezer who seemed to carry some heavy influence with the Scorses/Coppolla/De Palma/Spielberg/Lucas crowd.

  3. Double check the audio link. It redirects to some spam garbage.

What happened to the TalkNetwork page? Its even less navigable than before.

  4. Jay, if you get a chance can you send me the link to the full show. Thanks

  5. So many good points in this episode. The points about voyuerism in rear window were quite poignant. I think you’re right to say that Hitchcock was predicting our culture. Something that hit home a bit about that point is that we “conspiracy theorists”, iconoclasts, alternative investigators, researchers, “the awakened” (lmao) are ourselves quite voyeuristic, delve deep into the lives, backgrounds and associations of others, are mistrustful, even cynical, often out of necessity or defense, but nevertheless we seem to encapsulate rear window most of all. Our rear window is the computer screen.

Alos, I looked up Ingrid Bergman to see a picture of her, and I stumbled upon pictures of her grand daughter. Here was one link that I found that was, if nothing else, synchronistic: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2430150/Agent-Provocateur-Elettra-Wiedemann-new-face-brand-helped-sexy-side.html
