  1. Hi Jay,

I’ve been reading your stuff since before I became Catholic in 2017. It seems to me that this article relies on the thesis that there is a break in continuity between the current and past papacies in terms of Doctrine. Presumably, if that could be refuted, then the Papal claims would stand?

As for the Orthodox position, it appears the strongest argument I have seen relies on the Eighth Ecumenical Council being 879 as opposed to 869. From what I understand, Pope John VIII reinstated Photios, remitted the anathemas of 869, but did not affirm the teachings of 879. Is there any evidence to the contrary for this? Would be interested to see a greater defence of the Orthodox position on this. If it is true, then naturally Orthodoxy would be the true church, as it is a demonstrable proof of Papal declarations against the Filioque, resulting in a contradiction in the claims of infallibility.

Cheers, and hanks for keeping me humble in my assessment of these matters.

    1. John VIII absolutely did ratify Synod of 879 a.d.

“We also approve what has been mercifully done at Constantinople by the synodal decree of your reinstatement…”

You can find all these texts in Francis Dvornik’s work “The Photian Schism.”

Short story- John VIII knew Photius had loosely translated his synodal letters to the 879 council. He addresses it and still ratifies the council. He Annuls the acts done against Photius at 869.
