Many Roman Catholics are in a tizzy over the recent Pope Francis statement to Singapore Youth that all religions are paths to God and that all human beings are sons of God. Of course, the statement was not referring to those in the Church who are sons of God, but all religions are pathways to God. In the live video transcript he also said this: “But ‘my God is more important than your god, is that true?’ There is only 1 God & each of has a language to arrive at God. Sikh, Muslim, Hindu, Christian, they are different paths.

Most Roman Catholics in comments I have seen are admitting this is patently false, but a few are still exercising extreme mental gymnastics to make this mean anything other than what it clearly says. But what few Roman Catholics are discussing is how this is really just a restatement of what Vatican 2’s Nostra Aetate and Lumen Gentium 16already said:

“But the plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator. In the first place amongst these there are the Muslims, who, professing to hold the faith of Abraham, along with us adore the one and merciful God, who on the last day will judge mankind. Nor is God far distant from those who in shadows and images seek the unknown God, for it is He who gives to all men life and breath and all things…” (LG16)

Note that in Lumen Gentium, the Muslims not only claim to have the Abrahamic faith, but in fact do, since they adore (a term of worship) the same God of Christians who will judge mankind.

Vatican 2’s Nostra Aetate states:

“3. The Church regards with esteem also the Moslems. They adore the one God,living and subsisting in Himself; merciful and all- powerful, the Creator of heaven and earth,(5) who has spoken to men; they take pains to submit wholeheartedly to even His inscrutable decrees, just as Abraham, with whom the faith of Islam takes pleasure in linking itself, submitted to God. Though they do not acknowledge Jesus as God, they revere Him as a prophet. They also honor Mary, His virgin Mother; at times they even call on her with devotion. In addition, they await the day of judgment when God will render their deserts to all those who have been raised up from the dead. Finally, they value the moral life and worship God especially through prayer, almsgiving and fasting.”

Firstly, the Muslims are the historic enemies of Christ, perennial known as godless and “anti-Christ” since they reject the deity of Christ and have murdered Christians and Jews. In fact, the papacy used to call crusades in defensive measure against the “wicked Mohammedans,” yet now the popes can pray in mosques towards Mecca since Vatican 2 has proclaimed this new faith.

Furthermore, Nostra Aetate 3 states Muslims do have the faith of Abraham and that they do worship God with prayer, alms and fasting, implying these are acceptable actions of worship from an Antichrist false religion. In fact, just a couple generations ago famed Roman Catholic apologists famously called it an Antichrist false religion, as Belloc did here. The position of the previous thousand plus years of Christianity including dogmas of East and West called this religion blasphemous and demonic. Yet Pope Francis and the ecumenist new religion has declared Islam to be yet another pathway to God among the many world religions, perfectly in accord with the dogmatic teachings of Vatican 2.

As a result of these horrendous errors, Roman Catholics have utilized the classic deflection that “he wasn’t speaking infallibly” and it “wasn’t dogmatic.” This deflection has nothing to do with Vatican 1’s teaching that the Roman See can never err, has never erred, and will be preserved until the end of time with its constituent elements and marks. In other words, the 4 marks of the Church, and particularly the visible unity of the Church is guaranteed by the perpetual, visible successors to Peter in Rome “until the end of time.”

The language of Vatican 1 is unambiguous and leaves no room for vast periods of time where Rome apostatizes as many devotees of Marian apparitions claim. All the apparition nonsense is refuted by the dogmatic statements in Vatican 1 that the See of Peter maintains its visible unity with its living successors and magisterium until the end time. Note, it does not say “Until the end times,” implying a Roman apostasy, it says end of time, meaning the return of Christ.  Vatican 1 reads

  1. So then,
    • just as he sent apostles, whom he chose out of the world [39] ,
    • even as he had been sent by the Father [40],
    • in like manner it was his will that in his church there should be shepherds and teachers until the end of time.
  2. In order, then, that
    • the episcopal office should be one and undivided and that,
    • by the union of the clergy,
    • the whole multitude of believers should be held together in the unity of
      • faith and
      • communion,
    • he set blessed Peter over the rest of the apostles and
    • instituted in him the permanent principle of both unities and
    • their visible foundation.
  3. Upon the strength of this foundation was to be built the eternal temple, and the church whose topmost part reaches heaven was to rise upon the firmness of this foundation [41] .
  4. And since the gates of hell trying, if they can, to overthrow the church, make their assault with a hatred that increases day by day against its divinely laid foundation,
    • we judge it necessary,
      • with the approbation of the sacred council, and
      • for the protection, defence and growth of the catholic flock,
    • to propound the doctrine concerning the
      1. institution,
      2. permanence and
      3. nature
    • of the sacred and apostolic primacy,
    • upon which the strength and coherence of the whole church depends.”

This means it’s impossible for a pope to be a heretic or an apostate or for the Roman See to elect heretics, apostatize, fall away, disappear, cease to exist, go underground, etc. It is said to be a permanent, globally visible institution until the end of time. If it did fall away, the logic of Vatican 1 goes, then the Roman Church would lose one of its essential, constituent elements supposedly tied to that Roman See- visible unity. In so doing, it would lose one of the 4 marks, and by extension would then lose all 4 marks, as the gates of hell would have prevailed.

The other deflection Catholics fall back on is disregarding most modern Vatican teaching and scandals because supposedly a Catholic is “only bound by a few explicit dogmas and ex cathedra statements.” This myth is utterly foreign to papalism and has been condemned numerous times over:

Denzinger 1683:

While, in truth, We laud these men with due praise because they professed the truth which necessarily arises from their obligation to the Catholic faith, We wish to persuade Ourselves that they did not wish to confine the obligation, by which Catholic teachers and writers are absolutely bound, only to those decrees which are set forth by the infallible judgment of the Church as dogmas of faith to be believed by all [see n. 1722]. And We persuade Ourselves, also, that they did not wish to declare that that perfect adhesion to revealed truths, which they recognized as absolutely necessary to attain true progress in the sciences and to refute errors, could be obtained if faith and obedience were given only to the dogmas expressly defined by the Church. For, even if it were a matter concerning that subjection which is to be manifested by an act of divine faith, nevertheless, it would not have to be limited to those matters which have been defined by express decrees of the ecumenical Councils, or of the Roman Pontiffs and of this See, but would have to be extended also to those matters which are handed down as divinely revealed by the ordinary teaching power of the whole Church spread throughout the world, and therefore, by universal and common consent are held by Catholic theologians to belong to faith.”

The next condemnation is even stronger, as it condemns those who would even dissent from the pope’s juridical decisions or excommunications – this means the SSPX is 100% schismatic, as they are premised on rejecting this ordinary magisterium:

1698 “Nor do they blush to profess openly and publicly the axiom and principle of heretics from which so many perverse opinions and errors arise. For they repeatedly say that “the ecclesiastical power is not by divine right distinct from and independent of the civil power, and that the distinction and independence of the same could not be preserved without the essential rights of the civil power being invaded and usurped by the Church.” And, we cannot pass over in silence the boldness of those who “not enduring sound doctrine” [2 Tim. 4:3], contend that “without sin and with no loss of Catholic profession, one can withhold assent and obedience to those judgments and decrees of the Apostolic See, whose object is declared to relate to the general good of the Church and its rights and discipline, provided it does not touch dogmas of faith or morals.” There is no one who does not see and understand clearly and openly how opposed this is to the Catholic dogma of the plenary power divinely bestowed on the Roman Pontiff by Christ the Lord Himself of feeding, ruling, and governing the universal Church.”

The very position most “Catholics” and “TradCats” espouse is literally a condemned proposition:

“1722 22. The obligation by which Catholic teachers and writers are absolutely bound is restricted to those matters only which are proposed by the infallible judgment of the Church, to be believed by all as dogmas of faith (30 [see n. 1683]).” CONDEMNED

This final section from Vatican 1 states that what is necessary for Roman Catholics is far greater than a few dogmas: it is all the papal ordinary teaching!

“1792 [The object of faith] Further, by divine and Catholic faith, all those things must be believed which are contained in the written word of God and in tradition, and those which are proposed by the Church, either in a solemn pronouncement or in her ordinary and universal teaching power, to be believed as divinely revealed.”

In Roman Catholic moral theology and canon law, all heretics are no longer members of the mystical body in Roman Catholic theology and a heretic ipso factolatae sententiae removes himself from the church without any official declaration. Why? Because they are removed by the act itself in RC canon law:

“Can. 1364— § 1. An apostate from the faith, a heretic or a schismatic incurs a latae sententiae excommunication, without prejudice to the provision of can. 194 § 1 n. 2; he or she may also be punished with the penalties mentioned in can. 1336 §§ 2-4.”

The crux is this: The Roman See has defected – it defected long ago, and Orthodoxy is vindicated as the original, patristic, first millennium Church.
