  1. Two points of interest.
In 1982 I was at Notre Dame University in my second year of medical school. ND has no medical school of it’s own, but is one of eight centers for the IU Medical School that handles the first two years of basic science. Before Medical School, I had been on a career path to be a PhD in Biochemistry, then into molecular genetics/virology.
My worst instructor at ND that year was Morris Pollard, PhD. He taught microbiology poorly and wasted most of our time talking about his glory years as a grad student with Jonas Salk while researching the Salk polio vaccine. One day he played a b&w video documenting the effect of polio on lab chimpanzees. They infected the primates, documented the course of the disease, and demonstrated the neurologic damage inventively. They threw them off 10-15 foot heights, broke bones, and when I saw them snuffing out cigarettes on eyeballs, I walked out. Dr Pollard taunted me, “What’s the matter Dr Patch, is science too much for you?’ I replied, “What you are demonstrating is sadism not science.” Morris Pollard is the father of Jonathan Pollard.

Last week, I was buffing up my memories about the vaccinia virus. The gift of god, that with the recognition of its significance by Louis Pasteur, gave man freedom from smallpox. I read several reports including Wikipedia. Then I looked at the references on Wikipedia, as I always do and I spotted a most unusual title(#16 I believe),so I downloaded and read an NIH article from 2010 in it’s entirety of 27 pages.
“Highly Efficient Reprogramming to pluripotency and directed differentiation of human cells using synthetic modified mRNA.”
