  1. The film, and the graphic novel, are based on a book that came out in the 1970s called Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution by Stephen Knight, which was the first to allege that the killings were Masonic rituals. This has been taken up more recently, and much more thoroughly, by Bruce Robinson in They All Love Jack: Busting the Ripper. He argues that the evidence of Masonic overtones to the killings is incontrovertible, but that the Knight book may well have been disinformation because other aspects of the theory are absurd. He makes a compelling case instead for another Mason, not a royal. He alleges that the police and the establishment covered up the killings because the whole establishment was riddled with Masons and they knew they couldn’t go against one of their own. It’s a fascinating read, and very well-written, filled with righteous indignation over how depraved and degenerate 19th century London was.
